{"id":474,"date":"2023-03-06T16:55:53","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T21:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lineawealth.com\/?p=474"},"modified":"2023-03-06T16:57:48","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T21:57:48","slug":"justins-market-musings-march-06-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advisors1.bradcable.com\/lineaprivatewealthmanagement\/justins-market-musings-march-06-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Justin\u2019s Market Musings | March 06, 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-475 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/advisors1.bradcable.com\/lineaprivatewealthmanagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2023\/03\/review-mirror-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/199;\" \/>It is hard to believe we are already in March of 2023!\u00a0But, since time is going by so quickly, I thought it was a good time to look back at some of our previous blog posts.\u00a0Why?\u00a0Well, for one \u2013 nothing has changed with our expectations for 2023.\u00a0But, I also want to reiterate a few important things to remember as we continue to stumble our way through this challenging market and economic environment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1:\u00a0Don\u2019t try to time the market!!\u00a0Of course, we want to make smart adjustments over time, but trying to move in-and-out of cash to improve your results simply does not work (see blog post from October 2022:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lineawealth.com\/avoid-the-market-timing-urge-october-21-2022\/\">https:\/\/lineawealth.com\/avoid-the-market-timing-urge-october-21-2022\/<\/a>).\u00a0And, if you needed any more proof that market timing doesn\u2019t work, look no further than the start of 2023.\u00a0After the worst year for the S&amp;P 500 since 2008, January 2023 rewarded investors with one of the best January\u2019s on record, with a 6.18% return!<\/p>\n<p>2:\u00a0We are in one of the strongest periods of the year and of the 4-year Presidential cycle!\u00a0While historic patterns don\u2019t always work perfectly, it is wise to respect them.\u00a0In fact, in a September blog post (<a href=\"https:\/\/lineawealth.com\/patience-is-a-virtue-september-9-2022\/\">https:\/\/lineawealth.com\/patience-is-a-virtue-september-9-2022\/<\/a>) I pointed out that Q4 of 2022, and Q1\/Q2 of 2023 were the 3 strongest quarterly periods in the 4-year Presidential Cycle.\u00a0And, while the script has yet to be written on Q1\/Q2 2023, Q4 of 2022 rewarded investors with a 7.08% return for the S&amp;P 500.\u00a0That\u2019s a heck of a start!<\/p>\n<p>3: Yes \u2013 the market was fairly weak in February of this year, with the S&amp;P 500 losing 2.61%. Overall, this shouldn\u2019t be too surprising coming off such a strong January, but if we look closer, we\u2019ll see that historically, February is a weak month. In fact, the 2nd half of February is historically one of the weakest periods of the year. See the graph below from Ryan Detrick of Carson Investment Research. So, again, historic trends continue to prove valuable as a road map. That bodes well for March and April, at least.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-476 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/advisors1.bradcable.com\/lineaprivatewealthmanagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2023\/03\/beware-the-latter-half-of-Feb.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/advisors1.bradcable.com\/lineaprivatewealthmanagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2023\/03\/beware-the-latter-half-of-Feb.png 1200w, https:\/\/advisors1.bradcable.com\/lineaprivatewealthmanagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2023\/03\/beware-the-latter-half-of-Feb-980x490.png 980w, https:\/\/advisors1.bradcable.com\/lineaprivatewealthmanagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2023\/03\/beware-the-latter-half-of-Feb-480x240.png 480w\" data-sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1200px, 100vw\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1200\/600;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, while we continue to expect 2023 to be a frustrating year with plenty of ups-and-downs, we can\u2019t deny that history is in our favor at the moment.\u00a0Don\u2019t try to time the market.\u00a0Focus on your long-term goals.\u00a0But, we are optimistic about the next couple of months, so perhaps investment portfolios will be warming up along with our weather as we approach Spring!<\/p>\n<p>And lastly, as the GREAT Warren Buffet said:\u00a0\u201cThe stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We couldn\u2019t have said it any better ourselves!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px\">The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual.
